Woodstock, Illinois

As a part of the Creative Living Series through the Woodstock Fine Arts Association, Annie Polland is set to appear at the Woodstock Opera House on Thursday, November 16, at 10:00 AM with coffee and conversation offered at 9:00 AM.

The tenement buildings on Manhattan’s Lower East Side have been home to immigrants since the 1850s. Two of those buildings are now the Lower East Side Tenement Museum. Annie Polland, senior vice-president for programs and education, brings us its newest exhibition, featuring three families that lived at 103 Orchard Street in the 1950s and 1960s: the Epsteins, European refugees of the Holocaust; the Saez-Velezes, migrating from Puerto Rico; the Wongs, immigrants from China. Sharing the stories that inform the exhibition, Dr. Polland gives us a glimpse into the families’ fragile existence as they crossed international and cultural borders to become new Americans. Learn More

Richard Cahan & Michael Williams - Richard Nickel Dangerous Years: What He Saw and What He Wrote (January 18, 2018)
Woodstock Opera House
                Woodstock, Illinois

Richard Nickel is an urban legend, of sorts. The photographer and preservationist is remembered for his brave and lonely 20-year crusade to protect Chicago’s architectural heritage from the wrecking ball, as well as for his dramatic death, at age 43, in the rubble of the Stock Exchange Building, one of Louis Sullivan’s greatest works. Richard Cahan and Michael Williams bring Nickel’s remarkable personal story to life through compelling photographs that highlight the structural and decorative details of the buildings he loved and document his relationship with his city and his lifelong effort to preserve its architectural treasures. Learn More

Lindsay Mican Morgan - Thorne Rooms: Tiny Grandeur (February 15, 2018)
Woodstock Opera House
Woodstock, Illinois

As a part of the Creative Living Series through the Woodstock Fine Arts Association, Lindsay Mican Morgan is set to appear at the Woodstock Opera House on Thursday February 15, 2018, at 10:00 AM with coffee and conversation offered at 9:00 AM.

In the basement of the Art Institute of Chicago are 68 houses, none bigger than a shoebox. All are scale replicas of home interiors, from the Middle Ages to the Art Deco era: a Jacobean bedroom, a Shaker living room, a Biedermeier sitting room. Thorne Rooms curator (and housekeeper) Lindsay Morgan gives us a tour of this American art in miniature— revealing the immaculate detail of shelved volumes in a Regency library, faithfully reproduced screens in a Japanese Traditional interior, trompe l’œil diorama backdrops visible through tiny French doors—and explains why it has remained one of AIC’s most popular features. Learn More

Mary Skinner - Irena Sendler: In the Name of Their Mothers (March 15, 2018)

The documentary tells the story of Polish social worker Irena Sendler, who was part of a clandestine network of social workers and nuns. Working together to outwit the Nazis, they were able to save 2,500 Jewish children from the Warsaw Ghetto and almost certain death at Treblinka. Skinner recorded over 70 hours of interviews with Sendler and other eyewitnesses to history, including people who were active in the Polish Resistance. The award-winning film had its National PBS premiere in 2011 on Holocaust Remembrance Day. Learn More

Melissa Hannon - Peace and Paws Dog Rescue: Accent on the Smiles (April 19, 2018)
Woodstock Opera House
Woodstock, Illinois

As a part of the Creative Living Series through the Woodstock Fine Arts Association, Melissa Hannon is set to appear at the Woodstock Opera House on Thursday April 19, 2018, at 10:00 AM with coffee and conversation offered at 9:00 AM.

How does a nonprofit run by a skeleton crew stay engaged with tens of thousands of social media fans? Peace and Paws co-founders Melissa and Bo Hannon have had remarkable success using the notion that people would rather laugh than cry. Recurring posts such as “Monday Morning Staff Meeting,” “Windowsill Wars” and “Tip of the Day” feature her dogs Giddy, Twinkle and Nugget wearing odd headgear and offering their (often sarcastic) thoughts on signboards created by humans. The resulting smiles and shares have gained the organization a Facebook following of over half a million animal lovers and resulted in the adoption of over 3,000 shelter dogs. Learn More
