2017 Women's Works Fine Art Show (March 8 - April 29)

The astounding Women's Works Fine Art Show will be hosted at the Old Court House Arts Center. Celebrating its 30th anniversary, this year's show includes 120 works by artists from as far away as Japan, Croatia, the Middle East and beyond. Based on the seminal 1980 hit movie, and set in the late 1970's, this hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era is outrageous, thought-provoking, and even a little romantic.  Pushed to the boiling point, three female co-workers concoct a plan to get even with the sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot they call their boss. In a hilarious turn of events, Violet, Judy and Doralee live out their wildest fantasy - giving their boss the boot! While Hart remains "otherwise engaged," the women give their workplace a dream makeover, taking control of the company that had always kept them down.

Creative Living Series: Mary Badham - Gregory Peck, Harper Lee & Me (April 20)

Entering their 53rd year of educating and inspiring, the Woodstock Fine Arts Association presents the Creative Living Series. Held in the historic Woodstock Opera House, the Creative Living Series brings distinguished artists and speakers to the Woodstock community.

At age 10, with no prior acting experience, Mary Badham was chosen for the role of Scout Finch in To Kill A Mockingbird, which earned her an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress. She maintained contact with Gregory Peck, occasionally accompanying him on lecture tours. With an interest in spreading the message of tolerance and compassion in Harper Lee’s book on which the film was based, she has spoken to audiences across the country and internationally. Badham relates her experience working with the famous actor and why she waited until she was older to read the book. Learn More

The Shee Gees: A Bee Gees Tribute (April 22)

The She Gees is a female fronted, disco powered, fully choreographed journey through the music of one of the most iconic pop groups in history – the Bee Gees. The Bee Gees are second only to Lennon & McCartney as the most successful songwriting unit in British popular music. Eugene V. Debs and the Fight for Free Speech During WWI (April 25)
McHenry County Historical Society Museum
Union, Illinois

University of Tennessee historian Ernest F. Freeberg will mark America's entry into World War I by revisiting one of its greatest opponents: Socialist and one-time McHenry County prisoner, Eugene Debs. The talk will center around Freeberg's award-winning book, Democracy’s Prisoner: Eugene V. Debs, The Great War, and the Right to Dissent. The talk explores an important legacy of World War One, the fight for civil liberties waged by those who worked to free American socialist leader Eugene Debs from prison.

Doors to the McHenry County Historical Society Museum, 6422 Main St., Union, open at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $10 at the door. The lecture is being co-sponsored by the McHenry County Historical Society, Woodstock Celebrates and the Illinois Labor History Society.

A Land Twice Promised (April 30)

Israeli storyteller Noa Baum grew up in Jerusalem in the shadow of the ancestral traumas of the holocaust and ongoing wars. In America, she met a Palestinian woman who had grown up under Israeli Occupation, and as they shared memories of war years in Jerusalem, an unlikely friendship blossomed. A Land Twice Promised delves into the heart of one of the world's most enduring and complex conflicts. Baum's deeply personal memoir recounts her journey from girlhood in post­-Holocaust Israel to her adult encounter with "the other." With honesty, compassion, and humor, she captures the drama of a nation at war and her discovery of humanity in the enemy.

Formed in 1981 by percussionist Mike Schwimmer and pianist/arranger Joan Reynolds, the band specializes in ragtime for the 7-piece jazz band format and their concerts present a potpourri of musical Americana, straight from the roots of our animated musical heritage - ragtime, blues, and jazz, as well as pop selections from the 1920's thru the 1930's.  Violinist Will Ejzak-Reynolds will join pianist Joan Reynolds for some piano/violin duets during the program.
