COUSOUMEH - The Journey of the Steelpan (August 31)
Woodstock Opera House
Woodstock, Illinois

Cousoumeh. Cousoumeh is a period of beginning. That moment when the stove’s heat is lowered, the contents of the pot stirred one last time, the lid goes on and it is left to… well… cousoumeh.

It is there that plural becomes singular, pieces become whole, the individual becomes the collective. The etymology too represents that coming together- of languages and experiences; French and African, oppressor and oppressed, colonialism and independence. These fusions allow for the creation of a word that is 100% Trinidadian, like the steelpan.

The steelpan, the only acoustic instrument family created in the 21st century, is in fact a representation of a people and their history. From the depths of oppression, rebellion, struggle, power imbalances emerges a story of uprising, triumph, hope and empowerment. This instrument, singlehandedly, tells the tale of the community and the masses while giving a voice to the most peculiar orator, Akinola Sennon.

Akinola Sennon and his students, starting at only 6 years old from the Deltones Institute of Steel Drums and Music, are now about to take you on a journey. Our first scene begins with the arrival of Christopher Columbus, Africans, Indians and various other races of people. This incredible meeting of different people will be represented with an African dance during the “Arrival” scene. Next, comes the mingling.

Our second scene, the “Mingling” depicts the different races coexisting with each other, learning and sharing in spite of the different obstacles they face. In the “Mingling” comes the birth of the calypsonian and the panman as they search for their place in a society that itself is still creating an identity of it’s own. This was the spark that ignited a variety of events that takes us into independence.

Our third scene showcases the influence of emancipation, jazz, the war, and other unique innovations that all took place during the path to independence.

Our final scene takes us on a journey through migration, steelband riots, and the founding of Deltones Steel Orchestra. At this point, we revisit the steelpan and the inroads that it has made throughout the world. We see that our calypsonian has earned acknowledgment from the people and has begun to play a pivotal role in defining the country of Trinidad and Tobago as a people.

This presentation of "Cousoumeh" is brought to the Woodstock Opera House by Culture, Arts & Music and will also be joined by the Potts & Pans Community Steelbands.

Show starts at 7:00 PM.
TICKETS: $5.00 All Seats

A Tribute to the Music of Jethro Tull

Tom Flynn channels the 16th century bard, vagabond & troubadour in this tribute to the music of Ian Anderson & Jethro Tull.  Progressive rock is a sub-genre that developed in the late 1960′s and early 1970′s as part of a mostly British attempt to elevate rock music to new levels of credibility.  Progressive rock bands pushed technical and compositional boundaries by going beyond standard rock or popular song structures. Jethro Tull was in the forefront of that movement.

Annie Polland: Common Ground - Orchard & Delancey Streets, NYC (November 16)

Woodstock, Illinois

As a part of the Creative Living Series through the Woodstock Fine Arts Association, Annie Polland is set to appear at the Woodstock Opera House on Thursday, November 16, at 10:00 AM with coffee and conversation offered at 9:00 AM.

The tenement buildings on Manhattan’s Lower East Side have been home to immigrants since the 1850s. Two of those buildings are now the Lower East Side Tenement Museum. Annie Polland, senior vice-president for programs and education, brings us its newest exhibition, featuring three families that lived at 103 Orchard Street in the 1950s and 1960s: the Epsteins, European refugees of the Holocaust; the Saez-Velezes, migrating from Puerto Rico; the Wongs, immigrants from China. Sharing the stories that inform the exhibition, Dr. Polland gives us a glimpse into the families’ fragile existence as they crossed international and cultural borders to become new Americans. Learn More

Richard Cahan & Michael Williams - Richard Nickel Dangerous Years: What He Saw and What He Wrote (January 18, 2018)
Woodstock Opera House
                Woodstock, Illinois

Richard Nickel is an urban legend, of sorts. The photographer and preservationist is remembered for his brave and lonely 20-year crusade to protect Chicago’s architectural heritage from the wrecking ball, as well as for his dramatic death, at age 43, in the rubble of the Stock Exchange Building, one of Louis Sullivan’s greatest works. Richard Cahan and Michael Williams bring Nickel’s remarkable personal story to life through compelling photographs that highlight the structural and decorative details of the buildings he loved and document his relationship with his city and his lifelong effort to preserve its architectural treasures. Learn More

Lindsay Mican Morgan - Thorne Rooms: Tiny Grandeur (February 15, 2018)

In the basement of the Art Institute of Chicago are 68 houses, none bigger than a shoebox. All are scale replicas of home interiors, from the Middle Ages to the Art Deco era: a Jacobean bedroom, a Shaker living room, a Biedermeier sitting room. Thorne Rooms curator (and housekeeper) Lindsay Morgan gives us a tour of this American art in miniature— revealing the immaculate detail of shelved volumes in a Regency library, faithfully reproduced screens in a Japanese Traditional interior, trompe l’œil diorama backdrops visible through tiny French doors—and explains why it has remained one of AIC’s most popular features. Learn More

Skinner recorded over 70 hours of interviews with Sendler and other eyewitnesses to history, including people who were active in the Polish Resistance. The award-winning film had its National PBS premiere in 2011 on Holocaust Remembrance Day. Learn More

Melissa Hannon - Peace and Paws Dog Rescue: Accent on the Smiles (April 19, 2018)
Woodstock Opera House
Woodstock, Illinois

As a part of the Creative Living Series through the Woodstock Fine Arts Association, Melissa Hannon is set to appear at the Woodstock Opera House on Thursday April 19, 2018, at 10:00 AM with coffee and conversation offered at 9:00 AM.

How does a nonprofit run by a skeleton crew stay engaged with tens of thousands of social media fans? Peace and Paws co-founders Melissa and Bo Hannon have had remarkable success using the notion that people would rather laugh than cry. Recurring posts such as “Monday Morning Staff Meeting,” “Windowsill Wars” and “Tip of the Day” feature her dogs Giddy, Twinkle and Nugget wearing odd headgear and offering their (often sarcastic) thoughts on signboards created by humans. The resulting smiles and shares have gained the organization a Facebook following of over half a million animal lovers and resulted in the adoption of over 3,000 shelter dogs. Learn More
